I put up a post a couple of days ago about the problem i'm having and I'm getting the impression that its a widespread problem( see my earlier post for info). I'd like to hear from anyone else whose had a similar problem and would like to hear how, or if it was resolved.Thanks,Mike

I've got a 4300 2wd that had to be in the shop one time for an adjustment to the shifter. It takes a little getting accustomed to after years of regular shifters but now at 220hrs I wouldn't trade it for anything else I've used. Try going to neutral in the gears before changing to another range. It works for me. You should be able to feel the position of each range. Good luck ....

Owners manual says to put in neutral before changing ranges.I have also had to cut sheild around lever.I also marked side of fender for range lever as factory label is way off . This helped . ....

Mike,Yes, their is a problem with the collar shift transmissions. In my case it is with a 4200 model. Here is an overview of the problems I have had with the tractor since delivery back in February.All events occur with tractor at normal operating temperature and speeds.1) At a complete stop in all gears and ranges a) Tractor will not shift into gear at idle. A of wait more than 5 seconds is necessary before gears will not grind when engaging into gear.b) At 2000 Rpm’s and above the transmission will not engage into gear at all regardless of the amount of time clutch is depressed. 2) 2) In low range (A) all gears 1,2,3,Ra) Tractor will continue to move for at least 3 seconds after clutch is depressed, this is on a level surface with no load (pushing / pulling).b) On an incline with clutch depressed and no brakes set the tractor will not drift.Tractor will drift in ranges B,C so the brake adjustment is not a problem.(As Of May 1999)My collar shift tractor presently has 75 hours on it with a worsening clutch problem. The tractor has been increasingly difficult to engage into gear and clutch free play is almost non-adjustable.My dealer has done clutch adjustments e.g. shim adjustment (a major tear down), and several clutch play adjustments. After the last clutch play adjustment two weeks ago, to rectify the lose of clutch free play, the tractor operated properly for me until it was on an incline. This is when I discovered that the tractor was not possible to shift into gear. The only way I could shift into gear on a hill was to shut the tractor off and then shift into gear before starting the tractor.The tractor clutch is now at the point were it gives me two adjustment options; the first is that their is no clutch free play and the clutch is either engagedor disengaged. Their being no smooth transition between disengagement and engagement. The second is that the free play is adjusted to manufacturer specsand the changing of gears on an incline is not possible with out shutting down the tractor and also the free play is marginal at best.John deere is aware of this problem on my tractor and JD has told me that at this point in time they DO NOT have a correction for the problem, but theyare well aware of these type of problems on the 4200 models.My dealer has been very supportive in my situation and has done everythingpossible on their end to resolve this issue. I am now at the point of awaiting the delivery of a 4200 hydro model which MY dealer ordered and JD has offeredas a replacement. I just have to pay the difference between collar and hydro.Good luck with your 4300. ....

Mike,To finish my last remark on 4200 clutch problem.My dealer has done everything on their end to resolve this issue. JD is awareof the problem and has told me that at this time they don't have any corrective action for the problem but that they are working on correcting the problem. In the meantime, my dealer has ordered a 4200 hydro for me as a replacement. I just have to pay the difference between Shift And Hydro. A good deal I think.Good luck with your 4300. I hope it's better than my situation. ....

It sounds like JD should have let Yanmar continue building the entire tractor like they did with the 50 and 70 series instead of building their own tractor with Yanmar engines. I have always been a little leery about making a big purchase when it was a new model or first year run of a model. Sounds like they may have rushed production a little. ....

I've got many of the same problems: knobs hit in low range reverse, hard to shift, etc. I thought it was just my lack of experience. Problem is I don't have the extra cash to get into the hydro. If I did it would go toward other implements I still need. I am hoping that it will hold it's value and I can sell in a year or to and upgrade. 4200 4wd. ....

I spoke to the general manager at the dealership last Saturday, telling him about my disatisfaction with thecollar shift, he said that he thought Deere was putting out a "modification kit" to try to fix them, it would be an 8 hour job and they have about 30 of these tractors they've sold that will need it, and they were planning to try to do them sometime next fall whenthey have the time. I guess thats the way they do things now, draw up a quick design, shoot it through the factory and get the money from the customers, then if theres a problem, deal with it later. On Sunday I sent an email to the dealer and to Deere, saying that I would like to either trade it back to themfor a different model, if they would give me full credit for it , or they could just plain take it back, other wise I was going to see about just trading it in on a Kubota. It's now Wed. and I never got any kind of response to my email from the manager. His service dept did call this morning, they want to come pickup the tractor( charging me $65 for that) and keep it for 2 weeks and see if they can find what if anything is wrong with it. ....

After complaining about Deere, I feel I should let everyone know that my dealer has agreed to take my tractor back and get me a hydro model, he also offered to get me a 970 if I preferred, but so far I have liked the 4300, except for the collar shift. It seems part of our problem was a breakdown in communication.I have my phone forwarded when I'm on the internet but apparently it's not working rightbecause he had been trying to reach me but couldn't get through. ....
